Living through the Shanghai Lockdown

Living through the Shanghai Lockdown follows the story of my life as an expatriate living in China during the COVID-19 pandemic. The confinement of 26 million citizens in Shanghai was and is an individual yet shared experience. Fear, anger, confusion, and anxiety gripped us all. The extreme circumstances took a toll emotionally, mentally, and physically as lack of food and water was our reality. This body of work aims to transmit the helplessness and hopelessness that was experienced in Shanghai in 2022.

Documenting these traumatic events has also been part of the healing process. I invite the viewer to consider the metaphorical use of tangled string and heavy rocks as a means of illustrating powerlessness under the weight and pressure of adverse conditions. Included herein are additional artistic reflections on the subsequent “A4 Revolution,” and “White Paper Protests” that took place after my departure.
